Behind Every Great Blogger is a Husband Who's Waiting for His Dinner

by | May 13, 2014 | Tierneys Unmasked | 27 comments

While we’re out of town, I thought you might like to get to know the family a little better.

Here’s interview number one: my husband Jim.

You’re often known as “the Husband” on this blog. Would it be accurate to say that that’s what most people call you?
No.

What do you do that you can afford to have all these children?
I can’t afford all these children. That doesn’t mean I’m going to turn them away.

Do you read my blog?
Sometimes.

What do you think?
I think it’s good.

What is it like to be married to a blogger?
Pretty much the same as being married to a non-blogger. I’ve been married to both.

There has been speculation in the blogosphere that I am a robot. Can you put those robot rumors to rest?
I can confirm that you are not a robot, but you are possibly non-human.

What makes you say that?
The apparent no need for sleep, night vision, no need to consume water.

You sneeze really loud. Why do you think that is?
I am as God made me. And it’s “loudly.”

It certainly is. What’s your favorite book?
Undaunted Courage

It’s possible that my readership is not familiar with that book. What can you tell us about it?
It is Steven Ambrose’s account of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Should moms read it?
Yes.

How applicable might it be to our daily lives?
It contains extreme courage, persistence in the face of hardships, shooting bears, negotiating with Native Americans, and canoeing upstream.

I do at least one of those things on a daily basis.
Is that a question?

No. What’s your favorite movie?
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Would you let your children see it?
No

Ever?
Yes. They can see it when they’re thirteen.

What made you decide to propose so quickly?
You were the girl who was meant to be my wife. I don’t mess around.

What would you say if your son wanted to marry a girl he just met?
I hadn’t JUST met you. Like THAT DAY? Like Frozen? I would object. After two months it would be okay.

How many times have you seen Frozen?
Once. That was enough.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the songs from Frozen are quite popular. Which is your favorite?
“Another One Bites the Dust”

I don’t remember that one.
I’m pretty sure it was in there.

If you had a blog what would it be about?
It would be about the parallels between military life and the Christian interior life.

What would it be called?
The Breech, in reference to Ezekiel 22:30.

How do you spell Ezekiel?
Is this a real question? Is this going to be in there?

Yes.
e-z-e-k-i-e-l

You looked something up on your phone before. Do you have a secret blog that you’ve never told me about and have trouble remembering the name of?
No.

What were you doing?
I was looking up the Ezekiel quote.

Okay. I’m glad we cleared that up. What’s your favorite thing for dinner?
Your caprese pasta and fried chicken.

I haven’t made that in a while.
Why haven’t you made that in a while?

I’m asking the questions.

Well, I think we’re done here. Thank you for your time. My secretary will validate your parking when she wakes up from her nap.

Love this! Looking forward to the other instalments 🙂

    Love it!
I think if your husband likes "Undaunted Courage" and has already read all the other Ambrose that he cares to, he should check out "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing – about the ill-fated and incredible Antarctic expedition of Ernest Shackleton. It's one of my all time favorites – history and timeless human interest story combined – and they should give me a cut of the royalties for how much I promote and recommend it.
    Safe travels!

My husband LOVED Endurance. He's been into adventure stories recently, so I'm going to recommend this Undaunted Courage one next…

This is so cute. Tell Jim that Clark of Lewis and Clark is my ancestor. #proud

I love this so much! The picture where he photo-bombs you and Lulu is phenomenal!

I can see why you are married to each other. The humor is fantastic.

  5. Bonnie

That book sounds good! I can't wait until I live in a town with a library and I can borrow it and read it – for FREE!

I love following your blog. I think all your posts have been funny and/or enjoyable, but this is probably one of my favorites. I especially love the photobomb picture with you and Lulu, your gorgeous engagement picture (I'm guessing?), and that your husband didn't elaborate on any of the questions–pretty hilarious!

Love this. Praise God for godly, fun-loving marriages that makes such good examples for us younger couples. 😉

  8. Jeannine

I loved this interview! Mostly, I loved that Jim would blog about the parallels between military life & the Christian interior life.

  9. Beth (A Mom's Life)

Your husband sounds a lot like mine. He only sometimes reads my blog. He sneezes very loud (ly). Likes to correct my grammar and just finished a book on Lewis and Clark. (Not sure if it was the same one or not.).

However, there is one major difference. My husband waited four long years before he proposed to me! What's up with that???

  10. Micaela Darr

Oh my gosh. I enjoyed this so much. It helps that I can hear you guys saying these things to each other, and Jim's wry tone is just awesome.

Also, he knows how to spell "Ezekiel!" Bonus!

I had to show this to my husband. He could relate, even without being married to a "great' blogger. 😉 He still has to wait for dinner. And proposed relatively quickly. (He thought so, anyway.)

  12. Elise

Love this idea of "The Tierneys Unmasked" – so fun! And I love the title of this post – isn't that the truth? 🙂 Hope you have a great trip, Kendra!

  13. Anna

He sounds like a swell guy Kendra. What is this Caprese Pasta and fried chicken? Is this a single dish that works together or are these separate things? I usually do caprese pasta as a side dish but I would love to make it into an entree.

  14. Abby S.

Nice job, Jim! And I think you ought to interview Bobby next. We don't see nearly enough of that guy around this blog!

Hi! I’m Kendra.

For twenty years now, I’ve been using food, prayer, and conversation based around the liturgical calendar to share the lives of the saints and the beautiful truths and traditions of our Catholic faith. My own ten children, our friends and neighbors, and people just like you have been on this journey with me.

If you’d like to learn more about what Catholics believe and why, and to be inspired by saints from every era all over the world, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the prospect of how to teach your kids about the faith in a way that’s true, engaging, and lasts a lifetime, we can help!
