Happy Mother's Day . . . Now Answer Me This!

by | May 11, 2014 | Answer Me This, May | 8 comments

Happy Mother’s Day to you whether you are a mom or have a mom or hope to be a mom. And if you are grieving today, please know that you have my prayers.

A big thank you to my mom:

who is already in Lourdes waiting for us! Love you mom!

 Thank you to my children, who are my reason for being.

And thank you to God and my husband for entrusting them to my care.

Here’s a little something I wrote last year:

WHY I NEED ALL THESE KIDS

Now on to another installment of . . .

Here are THIS WEEK’s questions:
1. What’s for dinner?
Dinner Saturday was leftover Tea Sandwiches after our annual Little Flowers Mother’s Day Tea! How I love this club. It is the sweetest. thing. ever.

We leave town Monday, so all the leftovers need to get eaten up, but . . . since it’s Mother’s Day, we’ll probably get takeout Thai food!

2. What’s the last thing you borrowed from someone?
Our homeschool group is great about lending baby stuff around, which is really nice. I borrowed a swing for Lulu from my friend Abby. But then she had a baby, so I got myself the same one from Craigslist. And I borrowed a Moby Wrap from Micaela, but I think she must be a Jedi or something, because I never could operate it correctly. Plus now she’s having a baby too, so I’m giving it back. I’m going to stick with the Ergo.
3. What is your favorite prayer?
I think the Morning Offering is probably the most important prayer that I say each day, and it’s the one I’m very, very consistent about doing.
But for sheer old-school awesomeness, I’m going to have to go with the St. Michael Prayer.
4. What is the oldest thing in your house?
I like old stuff. I have one grandmother’s serving pieces, and another grandmother’s dishes. I have a grandfather clock built by my grandfather. I have a pocket-watch that belonged to my grandmother’s father (who was named Jack, but I didn’t find that out until we’d already started calling our oldest Jack!). I think MY oldest thing is a ring that my mom passed along to me on my high school graduation day that first belonged to my grandmother’s grandmother.
But I think the oldest thing is the house is a seventeenth century coin that a family friend gave to Jack.
5. What’s the best concert you ever attended?
I have not been to very many concerts in my life. In high school I went to see Amy Grant. In college I saw They Might Be Giants twice and The Cranberries and Dave Matthews Band once. My sister took me to see Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
Recently, I’ve seen the Head and the Heart, and the Hope and Justin Band. Both were really, really great.
But the best concert I ever saw was The Chieftains. The husband and I saw them live in a small venue when he was in graduate school and there was singing and dancing and carrying on, there were fiddles and uilleann pipes. They just had so much love for their music. It was breathtaking. It was really, really somethin.’
6. Do you have a nickname?
I do not, and never have. In the fourth grade I tried to get people to call me Kenny, and have been forever grateful that it didn’t catch on.
My dad didn’t like the idea of nicknames and purposefully gave my sister and me names that weren’t easily shortened. Six out of seven of my own kids go by nicknames.
Next week’s Answer Me This will be hosted by the gracious and lovely Haley of Carrots for Michaelmas, since we’ll be gallivanting about Europe.
Here are NEXT WEEK‘s questions. You’ll answer them over there. Next week.
1. What’s the scariest thing that’s ever been in your yard?
2. Beards. Thumbs up or thumbs down?
3. If stuff breaks, can you fix it?
4. What was your first car?
5. How often do you eat out?
6. Why is your hair like that?
I look forward to reading everyone’s posts from France!
Next week’s installment will go live at 10pm Pacific Saturday night, at Carrots for Michaelmas and will be open until 10pm Wednesday night.

So, please, answer this week’s questions for yourself in the comments here at Catholic All Year. If you have a blog, answer the questions there, link back to this post, and link your blog post up below. Thanks for playing along.

    You saw The Chieftains! Very cool! I love them!

    I will be praying for you and your family while you are on your trip.

  2. Amy

    I love that you have a Little Flowers club! I'm planning to start it here with women from my Bible study. I can't wait!

  3. Iris - Country Girl's Daybook

    The St. Michael Prayer rocks. I almost put that down for mine, but it got bumped by another. 😉 And I used to be in the Little Flowers club out here! A loooonnnnng time ago. 🙂 Glad to hear y'all have one too!

  4. Christine

    I'm a little jealous that you saw The Cranberries! They are one of my favorite bands. I don't know that I've ever actually met anyone else who's a big fan, though….most people think the lead singer sounds like "a goose honking." 😀

    Hello & Happy Mother's Day to everyone!
    Dinner: fresh, wild-caught salmon with green salad/cranberries/pecans & vinaigrette dressing;
    Last thing I borrowed: book – The Miracle of Father Kapaun (totally recommend this one!);
    Fav prayer: the Hail, Holy Queen – so beautiful!;
    Oldest thing in my house: my grandmother's charm bracelet, complete with heirloom gold wedding bands that belonged to my great-grandparents AND her "jewelry box" which was really an antique wooden spice cabinet with nine wooden drawers that has little wood drawer pulls, all handmade. Lovely memories attached to both of those items for me.
    Best concert you ever attended: really love going to concerts, but one of the best my DH & I saw this past fall – we went to an Aaron Neville concert for our anniversary (we played his songs at our wedding many moons ago); afterwards Aaron was signing CDs for people & I told him why we came to see him & he very kindly wished us a happy anniversary. It was beautiful; he didn't have to say anything to us, but that simple gesture, to me, says so much about his character. He's a practicing Catholic with a special devotion to St. Jude, which he talks about freely. Go see him sometime!
    Nickname: No, but when I lived, studied, and worked in France, I went by my name in French, which is "Marie-Helene" and I think it's so pretty in French, but not so much in English 😉
    Thanks for asking!

    Oh, just had a "nickname" memory:
    As a little girl, my younger brother – who was a toddler learning to talk – used to call me "BaaBaa" all the time. My parents asked him why he called me "BaaBaa" and he said, "Because I can't say 'Mare-dee Ell-den'!" Which, to this day, makes us all laugh – he was such an adorable little guy & we loved him with all our hearts 🙂

  7. Tacy

    What's for dinner? Beans (refried from a can of course) and white Long grain rice, I LOVE the St. Michael prayer- one of the great joys of now being Catholic. I am OBSESSED with the Cheiftains. Listened to them all the time in college and would have died to see them in concert. Are they still touring? Bela Fleck was the best concert of ever, IMO. My borrowed/oldest thing are one and the same- my Granny B's sewing box. Thank you for the pinnable prayer- it is now on my Pinterest page! Joy!
