Answer Me This: I'll Procrastinate Later

by | Jun 15, 2014 | Answer Me This | 11 comments

I’m writing this post about procrastination ahead of time, because we are headed east to the mid-west on our annual summer trip to visit our Southside Irish relations. I hope the space time continuum will be okay.

We have a winner of the Monastic Immersion Weekend Giveaway! Thank you all so much for your prayers. Keep ’em coming. And the winner is . . . Kelly M! If that’s you, please email me by Monday at 10pm Pacific.

1. What’s something you intended to do today, but didn’t?

My problem for each day of the past two weeks has been intending to accomplish much more than is humanly (or robotly) possible in a day. We only had a couple of weeks between our France trip and our Chicago trip, and I planned to create a 72 page yearbook for our homeschool group, plan and order our curriculum for next year, research and schedule our homeschool group Monday enrichment activities, throw a 12th birthday party, pack, write many blog posts, see all our friends before we go, finish Season 7 of Foyle’s War before my free preview of Acorn TV expires, and maybe do some canning.
The birthday party was last weekend. And I’m nearly finished packing. (Also, I’ve looked after the children.)
But, I pretty much intended to get all the rest of that done today, as I intended yesterday, and the day before. Even though it keeps not happening. I really do hate procrastinating. I would always rather do something right that second. Even if it’s totally unreasonable to think that I could.

Update: I finished the yearbook, whew! And the packing. But thank God for the internet, because I guess I’m ordering curriculum from Chicago this summer.

2. What’s your favorite grilling recipe?
After what I said about mayonnaise last week, I almost came up with another recipe. But, really, this one is my favorite thing on the grill. And it’s significantly mayo. Go figure.
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
5 ears corn, husk and silk removed
1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil grate.
2. Brush a thin layer of mayonnaise on each ear of corn. Sprinkle the corn with the Parmesan cheese, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Wrap each ear with aluminum foil and place on the grill.
3. Grill, turning occasionally, until the kernels begin to brown, about 10 minutes.

It’s easy, if a bit messy, and my kids love it too.

3. What movie did you see most recently?
Speaking of procrastination, I intended to watch these movies and review them on the blog. But . . . I haven’t had time to get to them yet!
So, here are some movies I’m planning to watch, that I have high hopes for, but haven’t quite seen yet:

The movie I actually saw most recently was God’s Not Dead. I found it to be . . . unsubtle, and have doubts about its ability to be an effective tool for evangelization.

4. Would you say your tendency is to over or under react to medical situations?
Under react for sure. I’m just always, generally, pretty sure it’s going to be fine. Whatever IT is. And so far it always has been. But my poor husband must live in fear that he’s going to come home one day and find me unconscious, having assured the kids I was fine and to not call 911 and disturb the whole neighborhood.

Same goes for the kiddos, I always try to take care of it at home. But sometimes that’s not possible. I think we’ve been to the ER five times since Jack was born: three sets of stitches, one dislocated elbow (but we learned from YouTube that all you have to do for that is bend their arm up and it pops back in!), and one swallowed magnet, that MIGHT have been two swallowed magnets, so we had to get an X-ray to make sure.

5. Do you squeeze the toothpaste tube or roll it?
I use prescription toothpaste.

Saying that always makes me think of this guy:

It comes in tiny tubes that are not really rollable.

But . . . I’d squeeze either way.

6. What are you doing for Father’s Day?
We had a Father’s Day celebration with MY dad, who is six kinds of awesome, last weekend, and then our family celebration with Jim this week, because we watch Pinocchio every Father’s Day, and then we head for Chicago to see Papa just in time for actual Father’s Day. The dads and big kids will be taking in the Sox game. The moms and little kids will be taking a nap.

For next week I’m tagging:

Natalie from Here I Am. Post to check out: Sleeping With Men

and

Madeline from A Dash of Snark. Post to check out: The Death of Barnes and Noble

Next week’s questions for them and for you are . . .

1. When’s the last time you got a new bathing suit?
2. Who made the last incoming call on your phone?
3. If you receive communion, do you receive it in the hands or on the tongue?
4. Do you have a tattoo?
5. How many dinner plates are in your house?
6. Do you have an accent?

Next week’s installment will go live at 10pm Pacific Saturday night, and will be open until 10pm Wednesday night.

So, please, answer this week’s questions for yourself in the comments. If you have a blog, answer the questions there, link back to this post, and link your blog post up below. Thanks for playing along.

That grilled corn recipe looks delicious. Grilling is something I wish was possible with apartment living in NYC. But alas, no grilling for us…hopefully some day!

I had to laugh at the medical question.
    Dude.
I'm an ER nurse, so unless you can't breathe, are spurting blood, or there's a bone sticking out, you won't see much of a reaction from me.

But ….. if it's panic time, I will flip the hell out. Baby #5 had a fever at 2 months old (bad, bad thing that young). I started sobbing hysterically, screamed to my husband to find the car keys and headed to the ER in a complete tizz, scaring him and all the other kids. She ended up fine, with some sort of virus, but I knew what kind of workup it entailed, etc.

If the kids come in crying, my first words are usually 'grab the ice pack'. Ice for everything! 🙂

I was so mad when Netflix took Foyle's War off of their instant streaming but then we signed up for amazon prime and problem solved! Hope you're enjoying Chicago this summer!

Mahi Mahi on the grill. Marinate in olive oil lemon juice and garlic salt. If you want it blackened then sprinkle with Cajun seasoning after putting on grill. Grill both sides until just done but don't dry it out.. Can be served with mango salsa for tropical taste treat.
We celebrate birth/holiday month so we are on grandads third father's day with two more birthday celebrations yet to come. Some deal.

Kendra, I popped in here Sunday to see how many were over-reactors like me or under-reactors. Believe it or not, the day after, my daughter fell off stairs and I over-reacted, thinking she broke her back. Called 911 and then your face popped up in my mind. Kendra said, its going to be fine whatever it is. It was and thank you for the reassurance 😉

I have another potential Father's Day movie to discuss. Finding Nemo. Nemo disobeys, which is bad, and gets caught in a fish tank, which is a natural consequence, but his dad searches everywhere and still rescues him. I LOVE IT! It does have a dead mother though, which I do not love. But overall I think it's a good father-son tale. What do you think?

Kati, I like your take on it. We just recently saw just the first part at the doctor's office and I was struck by the same thing. Marlin is not naturally daring, but there's never any question that he'd go off on this quest to save his son. And I do like the natural consequences!

Have you not seen the whole thing? Oh it's so good…Nemo thinks his dad won't be looking for him, and will just be mad at him for disobeying, and then he hears that his dad IS looking for him desperately and he's so surprised and thrilled and it's just a tad bit prodigal-son-esque. I'm a sucker for the dad will do anything for you theme, probably because it is comforting to think that our stories in that vain are but a peep into how the Father feels about us!

Hi! I’m Kendra.

For twenty years now, I’ve been using food, prayer, and conversation based around the liturgical calendar to share the lives of the saints and the beautiful truths and traditions of our Catholic faith. My own ten children, our friends and neighbors, and people just like you have been on this journey with me.

If you’d like to learn more about what Catholics believe and why, and to be inspired by saints from every era all over the world, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the prospect of how to teach your kids about the faith in a way that’s true, engaging, and lasts a lifetime, we can help!
